Tyres – Specification and Information

Here we look at both the tyres and hub options. The Figaro was supplied as standard with what is known as Polo Hub Caps. These white hub caps clip over the wheel hub with spring clips to complete the look of the Figaro.

  • Tyre Specification
According to the Figaro Maintenance Guide the tyre, specification is 165/70R12/77S however we understand that 155/80r12/77s is acceptable too.
  • Where to buy
In the UK many buy the Nankang Econex NA-1 which is 65/70 R12 T (77) At the time of writing (May 2022) the price was £52 each – Click here
  • Tread Depth Wear
We recommend changing the tyres when the tread depth reaches 1.6mm (UK)
  • Wheel Nut Torque
    We recommend 98 Nm

Identifying your existing tyres?
There are two main purposes of the text writing that you will see on the sidewall of the tyre.  The first is to help identify the size and specification of the tyres correctly.  The second is to confirm the tyre has been tested and approved to European and other country standards

What do the numbers and letters mean?

  • S – Speed Symbol / S = 112mph/180km
  • 77 – Load Index / 77 = 412Kg
  • 12 – Rim Diameter / 12 = 12″ Diameter (C)
  • R – Construction / R = Radial Construction
  • 70 – Aspect Ratio / 70 = 70% (B) of (A) = 115mm
  • 165 – Tyre Width / Width of Tyre = 165mm (A)
Tyre Size Tyre Pressure Comments
165/70R12/77S 2.0 BAR/29PSI Standard Use
155/SR12 2.2 BAR/32PSI Cold Weather
T115/70D14 4 BAR/60PSI Spare Tyre (Check Pressure)

Tyre Life
There is no definitive tyre age limit as to when you should replace your tyres but once your tyres reach 7-10 years old, you should keep a close eye on their condition and consider replacing them. Tyre age is commonly identified by small cracks, known as crazing, which appear in the tyre sidewall. Many Figaro owners only take our cars out on sunny days and the rest of the year they are wrapped up snuggly in their cocoons ready for the next adventure. Although your tyre will still have plenty of tread on it and it is road legal. Is it safe.? Rubber goes hard over years and loses its grip.

WE RECOMMEND CHANGING THE TYRE AT 10 YEARS

Below is how you can identify the age of your tyre

CHECK YOUR SPACE-SAVING TYRE
Often forgotten but very much needed in an emergency the space-saving tyre can be found in the lower boot. We bet that not many owners check the pressure and when we did (Kevin) we found it only had 1 bar when 4 bar is required!!

WHEEL HUB CAPS

The caps are designed to be fixed to the 12″ wheel hub. Below is an extract of an article written by Toby Brooks from The Figaro Shop and published in December 2017 in Figgyworld.
